How is therapy different from coaching?

Both may bring about behavioral change and help people understand how their cognitive and emotional reactions can interfere with personal effectiveness, performance, and well-being. They can even imply similar features in their modalities at times. However, they differ in their focus and intentions.

First and foremost, traditional psychotherapy is generally past-oriented, addresses painful or unresolved issues, and/or is designed as a response to psychopathology or exceptional hardships. On the other hand, coaching focuses on the present and future, is fundamentally goal-oriented, result-driven and solution-focused, and geared to people seeking enhancement in their performance, organizational skills, or personal growth.

In brief, therapy and coaching practices are not mutually exclusive , but rather complementary and can intervene at different steps in the process of change.
